The Battle of Britain

We were so interested in our study of the Second World War that we extended this topic from 4 to 8 weeks! We learned about the Battle of Britain, dogfights, the bouncing bomb and life on the Home Front. A range of classic and contemporary children's literature also enhanced our knowledge of wartime life - Goodnight Mister Tom, Carrie's War, Blitzed and Hitler's Canary.

Through studying biographical writing, we found out about wartime heroes of our choice, including Barnes Wallis, Douglas Bader, Odette Sansom, Nicholas Winton and many others. We learned how to research and use our own words, assess the reliability of websites, organise a biography and write summaries.

Fuelled with knowledge and inspired by the fiction we had read (and the film versions we had watched), we used primary sources such as wartime photographs and Pathe newsreels to plan and write our own stories set in World War Two.

Check back here to read some of them, in due course.
